About

Matthew Erren (he/him) is a Perth-based lighting designer working across theatre, dance, exhibitions, and live performance. His practice is driven by a passion for storytelling, creating lighting that responds to the emotional, spatial, and rhythmic demands of each work.

A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Matthew has designed productions for major companies and independent artists throughout Australia, including Black Swan State Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, WAYTCo, Perth Festival, and WA Museum Boola Bardip. His work spans intimate contemporary performance, large-scale theatrical productions, and permanent exhibition environments.

Recent design credits include The Trial: Franz Kafka/Phillip Glass, Scenes from the Climate Era, Blue by Thomas Weatherall, Hyperfantasia, How to Break: A Chair, A Love Letter to the Nightingale, The Comprehensive A–Z of Missing Persons Australia, Catch-22, and LEGENDS (of the Golden Arches). As an Associate Lighting Designer, he has collaborated on major productions including Steel Magnolias, Song Circle, and Dirty Birds working alongside some of Australia's leading lighting designers and creative teams.

Matthew is a three-time nominee for the Performing Arts WA Awards for Outstanding Lighting Design. Alongside his performance practice, he is a co-founder of Young and Erren Designs, delivering exhibition and architectural lighting projects for museums, galleries, and cultural institutions across Western Australia.
